Delilah’s Thoughts

Side projects 6/5/2024

The life of an author is as unique as the author itself. Some of us jump from one project to the next. Some will take a break in between. Some do three or four projects at a time. (We call them side-quests!)

I try to keep my side-quests at a minimum, focusing all my energies on the projects at hand so I can finish them on time. However, some things can’t be avoided and side-quests happen.

Today’s side-quest was poetry. I chose poetry because those who’ve known my writing journey, know my serious writing started with poetry. I have mainly focused on stories over the past few years, but I never got over the poetry bug. I’ve missed doing it. There’s just something about spoken music that I’ll never stop loving. I hope you enjoy it!

Happy firsts!

The first of November, the first day of NaNoWriMo, and my first blog!

In northeastern PA, we just got hit with our cold weather, reminding us that our long summer is finally over. My publisher sent out invitations to participate in NaNoWriMo this year. For those who don’t know, it stands for National Novel Writing Month. It’s an exciting event for authors, pro and amateur alike, and the goal is usually set to have 60,000 words written by the end of the month of November.

As a lifelong writer, I fairly LEAPT at the idea of participating in NaNoWriMo for my publisher’s contest. There were promises of prizes and it was a very exciting venture. And while I’m not lacking in plot-bunnies to fulfil my pledge of 80K words, I had to take a moment and step away from the contest. I have a book being published in the next few months (I know, it’s getting so close!); the sequel to the first book is only halfway done and the Jan. 1 deadline isn’t slowing its approach for anything. Not to mention a book to rebrand after my duology AND the trilogy (completely different storyline to the duology) after that! There’s no way I’m going to be able to participate in the writing challenge this year. And you know what? That’s alright.

As much as I’d love to participate, I know this year it isn’t going to work for me. That doesn’t mean I can’t rock it next year, right? Life’s about knowing where your priorities are and lining them up with your limitations, (at least, that’s what I get from it). So to all my friends on Slack who are doing the contest, and every other participant in NaNoWriMo this year, I wish you all the very best of luck in your endeavors.

Thanks for reading!!!
